Living in a World Of Injustice – Reflections on Psalm 37:23-27

We live in a world where there is difficulty, trials and injustice happening every day. At times your life can be impacted because of the injustice in the world. Even so, the Psalmist in Psalm 37 instructs us on how we are to respond to the present difficulties impacting our lives.

“The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord, And He delights in his way. Though he falls, he shall not be utterly cast down; For the Lord upholds him with His hand.” Psalm 37:23-24

Even in times of difficulty we can rest and delight in His way and know that He upholds us with his very hand. God upholds you in that difficult season even when doing what is right is hard.

The Psalmist says that he has been young and now he is old and he has never seen the righteous forsaken. Of the righteous he writes, “He is ever merciful, and lends; and his descendants are blessed.”

In Deuteronomy 15:7-11 the scripture talks about taking care of the poor in your land. He commands the people to “open your hand wide to your brother, to your poor and needy, in your land.”

Back in Psalm 37:27 we read, “Depart from evil, and do good; and dwell forevermore. For the Lord loves justice, and does not forsake His saints.”

What is the evil He is exhorting his readers to depart from? What is the good he is asking us to do? He stated the wicked borrow and do not give back (21). The righteous on the other hand are merciful and lend.

“The righteous shall inherit the land, and dwell in it forever.” Psalm 37:29

Jesus reflects this in the sermon on the mount. Speaking to those around Jesus said the meek are blessed and that they would inherit the earth. The whole sermon is about the condition of your heart, forgiving, sharing, going the extra mile, and being the salt and light of the earth. These attitudes are to carry over even in difficult situations where it seems the enemy has the upper hand.

“Blessed are the meek, For they shall inherit the earth.” Matthew 5:5

Can you do what is right and good even when injustice is directed at you? If you know God will take care of you then by the grace of God you can give of yourself. You have an inheritance waiting and all things will be made right.

Jesus is saying more than nice words He is saying what will take place. Just as Joshua took the people into the promised land and subdued the land of the enemies so Jesus will restore justice and righteousness on the earth.

“He who overcomes shall inherit all things.” Revelation 21:7

There is a coming time when the world will know no more death. There will be no physical death nor the death of our moments. The unrealized dreams and lost dreams now will be realized. Moth and rust will destroy no more.

So let me encourage you today to rest and wait on the Lord.

Depart from withholding, depart from hardening your heart, and start doing what is good knowing God will take care of all your needs.
